Post Holiday Decor

I love to decorate for the holidays. I start in early October with a full blown harvest theme, and break that down a couple of days after Thanksgiving and start on Christmas. Talk about a winter wonderland, Mrs. Claus a’int got nothing on me! It takes a full 4-5 days to decorate my home for Christmas. My mission is to incorporate a little Christmas in every room without it all becoming a tacky nightmare. But when the holidays are over and I’ve packed everything away. My house always seems a tad bit empty. My husband actually remarked “It looks like we got robbed”.

Challenge accepted!

I gave myself a nominal budget to add a little zest to my existing décor. First order of business, take note of the large empty spaces around my main living level. My kitchen looks into my sunroom via a bar height granite countertop. I needed something tall and dramatic to fill the large opening looking into the sunroom. I found a bundle of petrified sticks in the artificial flower section of Home Goods. My sun room is filled with plants so I didn’t want an artificial plant as the focal point. The sticks worked with my casual sunroom motif, yet still felt elegant and interesting. I already had the vase sitting on the floor in a corner, so I added the sticks and upgraded its stature in my room decor

We have a game table in our Great Room that is used often for cards, board games, and well eating! I decided a tray would work nicely on this table. Something to hold the decks of cards and the pen and paper used for tallies, or for snacks and drinks. Imagine my delight when I found a “book” with a card theme that actually was a box! So simple, silly, and perfect!

My mantle was bare, save the gorgeous pictures of my daughters, so that area need some love. I found a candle holder for votive candles at TJ Maxx. It stretched out across the mantle (which is great because anything with height would get in the way of the television) and I placed battery operated candles that I can easily turn on and off with a remote. On either side of the candle holder I placed metal spheres.

You can do so much with accessories, and there a dozens of retail shops that either cater to or have home décor departments. What are you waiting for? Take the Chotchkie Challenge, it’s so much more satisfying than the mannequin challenge (or whatever the new challenge is…).
