The Art of Folding

Usually, when I set my table, I rely on distinctive napkin rings to give my linens some flair. However, I have a casual event coming up and think napkin rings may be over the top. I decided to Master the Art of Napkin Folding! First Stop - www.About.com. My visit to About.com took me to www.thespruce.com. This website offered very detailed instructions and step by step pictures on napkin folding. I love when I find a website that I can keep in my back pocket that teaches me new tricks of the trade.

I started with the Pocket Fold. This is a quick and easy napkin arrangement good for any casual occasion. I’m proud to say I mastered the technique in two tries. This is the napkin fold I will use for my upcoming event.

Now feeling emboldened, I decided to try the Fan Fold. This ambitious looking napkin was more difficult and it took me at least 4 times of folding to get it right. The trick is to let the napkin fall to the side once folded. (That will make sense if you decided to try). This napkin is a staple of banquets and luncheons everywhere!

I used a medium weight linen napkin to practice both folds.

I placed the website pictures on the left and my attempts are on the right side of the photos below. I won’t win any awards, but practice makes perfect! Give it a shot, but don't invest too much energy, as soon as your guests sit down your creation disappears!
